Normet × SymX.AI

Normet has narrowed its focus.
The digital layer
could carry it further.

Normet set out four growth areas for 2026 to 2028: major underground mining accounts, services, the Xrock mining business, and strategic tunnelling markets. Services already accounts for 43% of net sales, and Q1 2026 came in at €128.7M with equipment backlog up 48.9%. The Normet Portal, the Remote Monitoring Centre, and the Xrock Autobreaker launched last December show a company that has been building this capability for years. A cross-OEM intelligence layer sitting on top of that installed base could extend Normet's services reach from Normet-manufactured equipment to the whole fleet at the same site, which may represent the shortest route to the 20% EBITA ambition. The architecture is already validated on a multi-OEM battery-electric fleet at Glencore's Onaping Depth, the closest public analogue to Normet's SmartDrive roadmap.

Glencore Onaping Depth: SymX validated at the world's first all-BEV deep nickel mine.

Onaping Depth is the most ambitious underground battery-electric project in the industry, a 2,500-metre-deep nickel mine designed from first principles around a 100-unit BEV fleet drawn from multiple OEMs. SymX was selected for a proof-of-concept on the OEM BEV equipment to validate connectivity, cross-OEM data integration, short-interval control, battery monitoring, and fleet optimisation. The result is the closest analogue to Normet's SmartDrive roadmap that exists today, endorsed by Glencore's COO on the public record.

The problem SymX solves is foundational. Connectivity and cross-OEM data integration at the point of work are infrastructure gaps the mining industry has struggled with for decades, but SymX changes the paradigm. Our proof of concept validation of the SymX platform on our OEM BEV equipment successfully supports underground short-interval control, battery monitoring, and fleet optimization. This level of integration and insight is exactly what the industry needs to move forward.

What the Glencore POC validates for Normet
Cross-OEM BEV integration works in production.
SymX ingested data from Epiroc, MacLean, and Kovatera BEVs through a single platform. Same architecture extends to Normet SmartDrive at Oyu Tolgoi, South32 Hermosa, and beyond.
Short-interval control at the point of work.
Operator-level dispatch decisions on a minute-by-minute cadence. This is the layer that sits above fleet telemetry, and it is what a SmartDrive fleet working at depth on a charge budget ultimately runs on.
Battery monitoring and fleet optimisation.
Charge-state-aware scheduling, battery health prediction, and energy-optimised cycle planning. Directly transferable to the SmartDrive economic case Normet sells today.
Strategic Alignment
Normet has already set the priorities. This is where SymX maps onto them.
Every line below is Normet's own public language from the 2025 Annual Report, the FY2025 results release, and the Q1 2026 interim report. The right-hand column is the only thing SymX is proposing.
🎯
Narrowed growth focus
Annual Report 2025

"Following a strategic review, we narrowed our focus areas for growth to include major mining accounts, services, the Xrock mining business and strategic tunneling markets."
— ED SANTAMARIA, PRESIDENT & CEO

Major mining accounts run mixed fleets. A cross-OEM intelligence layer could let Normet sell into the whole site rather than only the Normet-manufactured share of it, which is the difference between competing for equipment orders and holding the operating account.

🔧
Services as the growth engine
FY2025 · €203M · 43% of net sales

"Particularly pleased that many of the equipment orders last year came with long-term service agreements."
— ED SANTAMARIA, FY2025 RESULTS

Long-term service agreements are priced on expected failure rates. Predictive maintenance that gives 48 to 72 hours of warning changes the cost side of every one of those contracts, and it works the same way on the non-Normet equipment sitting in the same drift.

📈
20% EBITA by end of period
2026–2028 strategic KPIs

"Our margins, whilst much improved, are still behind our longer-term aspirations and we remain extremely focused."
— ED SANTAMARIA, Q1 2026

Software attached to an installed base carries a different margin profile than steel. Normet has ~15% annual growth and ~20% EBITA as published KPIs, alongside a €20M cost programme. A digital services line could contribute to both sides of that equation.

Automation and remote operations
Xrock Autobreaker · December 2025

"Autobreaker does not remove people from mining, it removes them from danger."
— VESA MARTTILA, NORMET XROCK

Normet shipped the first fully autonomous rock-breaking system in the industry and put a supervisor in a control room. That control room needs underground connectivity, live fleet state, and short-interval decisions across everything moving, not only the breaker.

The Full Stack
SymX builds every layer of the underground intelligence stack. A collaboration does not have to span all of them.
SymX is a full-stack platform: from edge hardware to connectivity to AI to end-user applications. Normet could engage with any single layer, a subset, or the complete stack depending on strategic priorities. The layers are modular by design.
Applications
iOS and Android apps. Live Control Room (2026). X.Inspect paperless inspections (2026). SymX.bot conversational fleet analysis (2026). Operator dashboards. Management analytics. Integration APIs for AVEVA, OSIsoft PI, SAP, Maximo. White-label capable.

Normet

The four SymX layers are independent and modular. Normet could adopt the connectivity layer alone to extend underground coverage for SmartDrive BEVs. Or the AI platforms alone to add predictive capabilities to Normet Portal. Or the full stack to offer a complete fleet intelligence service to customers. The architecture supports all three approaches.

Component-by-Component Synergy
Where each SymX capability could strengthen Normet's offering
A collaboration does not have to be all-or-nothing. Each component stands alone. The tags indicate how directly each one maps to Normet's current strategic priorities.
📶
Underground WiFi Mesh
HaLow mesh provides the connectivity infrastructure that Normet's SmartDrive BEVs and Remote Monitoring depend on. Most underground mines lack adequate WiFi. SymX deploys it as part of the platform. Normet could offer it as part of the equipment sale.
High synergy
🔮
Predictive Maintenance
Extends Normet Portal and Remote Monitoring from reactive alerts to 48–72hr failure prediction. Works on Normet equipment and the non-Normet fleet at the same site. Cross-OEM by design. Could strengthen Normet's long-term service agreements.
High synergy
BEV Fleet Intelligence
SmartDrive accounted for roughly 10% of Normet's 2025 equipment order intake. Charge scheduling, battery health prediction, energy-optimised dispatch. Directly relevant to the Oyu Tolgoi fleet, the 35 units going to South32 Hermosa between 2026 and 2030, and the first SmartDrive mixer now running at AngloGold Ashanti Cuiabá.
High synergy
🧠
Underground Dispatch AI
Sequences logistics vehicles, transmixers, explosive chargers, and personnel carriers through single-lane drifts and ventilation restrictions. Factors BEV charge state into scheduling. A 23% throughput increase is documented at a US underground operation. The same short-interval control layer could feed the Autobreaker control room.
High synergy
⚙️
Predictive Parts AI (Patented)
Auto-triggers parts procurement before equipment fails. Strengthens Normet's aftermarket and service agreements. The patent protects the prediction model. Runs on Normet equipment and non-Normet fleet interchangeably.
Medium synergy
📊
Cross-OEM Fleet Telematics
Normet Portal covers Normet equipment. SymBot extends coverage to Cat, Komatsu, Sandvik, Epiroc, Hitachi at the same site. One dashboard, all OEMs. Could position Normet as the digital partner for the entire underground fleet.
Medium synergy
🔴
Tire Lifecycle Intelligence
Relevant for Normet customers operating mixed fleets that include haul trucks. Less directly relevant for Normet's own concrete sprayers and logistics vehicles. Strongest fit at mine sites where Normet is the service partner for the full operation.
Selective
Fuel & Energy Optimisation
Fleet-wide fuel and energy tracking. For diesel fleets: litres-per-tonne-km. For BEV: kWh-per-tonne and charge cycle efficiency. Strongest synergy with SmartDrive fleet where energy optimisation is a direct customer value driver.
Medium synergy
🔷
SymBot Edge Hardware
6th generation edge device. In-house designed. Ingests CAN bus data from any OEM. Processes on-machine. Could be integrated into Normet equipment at factory or retrofitted. Each SymBot also serves as a mesh network node underground.
Selective
Normet's Digital Landscape
Where Normet stands relative to competitors in digital and fleet intelligence
Normet's core equipment business is strong and differentiated, and the Autobreaker launch put it ahead of both larger competitors on underground autonomy. The fleet-intelligence layer is the one area where all three OEMs remain scoped to their own machines, which is where a partner could move Normet ahead rather than alongside.

Interoperability
SymX connects to Normet's systems, the customer's systems, and every historian
Any technology that cannot integrate into what the customer already runs will be rejected by their operations team on day one. SymX was designed for this reality.
🏭
All OEM Fleet Systems
Cat · Komatsu · Sandvik · Epiroc · Normet

SymBot ingests CAN bus data from any underground equipment manufacturer. Normet Portal data is complemented, not replaced. The mine sees its full fleet in one view.

📈
Industrial Historians
AVEVA · OSIsoft PI · Honeywell

All telemetry feeds into AVEVA PI System, OSIsoft PI, or Honeywell PHD. The mine keeps its historian as system of record. SymX adds the mobile fleet layer historians were never designed to capture.

🔗
Enterprise Systems
SAP · Maximo · JDE · Pronto

Predictive alerts auto-trigger work orders in SAP PM, Maximo, or JDE. Parts procurement pushes directly to ERP. API-native. Could strengthen Normet's service agreements by connecting to the customer's maintenance workflow.

This interoperability could be the fastest path for Normet to offer a broader digital service to customers without building from scratch. Plug into what exists. Add intelligence on top.

Worth a conversation.

Normet and SymX have spent their years in the same environments, working on the same machines, for many of the same customers. Normet built the equipment and the service network. SymX built the layer that reads every machine at a site regardless of who manufactured it. Putting those together is a conversation about how Normet's services business grows, not a technology discussion.

If the timing is wrong, that is a fair answer and no harm done. If it is worth thirty minutes, the Onaping Depth architecture and where it maps onto the SmartDrive customer base is the place to start.
